Stock valuation and average cost

See what the stock on your shelves is worth, how the average cost is worked out, and export the figures for your accountant.

Who can do this: Anyone with the View inventory permission: Tenant admin, Store manager, Inventory clerk and Cashier by default, and Accountant (read only).

How the value is worked out

Stock value is on hand × average cost, for each product at each location.

Sevo uses the moving average cost. Each costed goods receipt blends the new purchase price into the average. For example, if you have 10 units that cost 100 each and you receive 10 more at 120 each, the average becomes 110.

Sales, transfers and stock counts do not change the average. When you sell, the cost of that sale is taken from the average at that moment and kept with the sale, so past profit figures do not change later.

Opening stock and correction adjustments with a unit cost also give an item its cost.

See your stock value

  1. Open Inventory → Stock valuation.
  2. Leave Location on All locations to see the whole business, or choose one store.
  3. The strip at the top shows the Stock value, the number of Costed lines, the Lines without a cost yet and the Products in stock.
  4. The table lists each item with its On hand, Average cost and Value.

Items with no cost

An item shows no cost when it was counted or adjusted in before any costed goods receipt. Its value is not included in the total, and a message tells you how many lines are affected.

To fix it, receive the item once through a purchase order, or post an adjustment with a unit cost.

Export for your accountant

  1. Choose the location, or All locations.
  2. Click Export CSV. A file named with today's date downloads, with Location, SKU, Product, Unit, On hand, Average cost and Value for each line.

Export at the end of each month so you have a record of your closing stock value.
