Set up a register and open a shift

Create a register in the back office, choose it on the till device once, and open a shift with the cash float in the drawer.

Who can do this: Managers set up registers (POS → Registers); anyone who can sell opens a shift

What a register and a shift are

A register is one till or checkout device. It belongs to one store location, so stock sold on it comes off that location. Its short code, such as R01, is printed on every receipt.

A shift is one session of selling on a register, from the moment you count the float into the drawer to the moment you count the drawer at the end. Every sale and return belongs to a shift, and the shift gives you the cash-up (the Z report) when you close it.

Create a register (managers)

  1. In the back office, go to POS → Registers.
  2. Click New register.
  3. Type a Code. Keep it short, such as R01. It can use letters, digits and hyphens, up to 10 characters.
  4. Type a Name, for example Front counter.
  5. Choose the Location this register belongs to.
  6. Choose a Price list, or leave it on Default to use the company's default price list.
  7. Click Create register.

To stop a till being used, click Deactivate on its row. It no longer appears in the list on the till. Click Activate to bring it back.

Choose this device's register

The first time you open the till on a device, it asks which register the device is. The device remembers your choice, so you do this only once.

  1. In the back office, go to POS → Open register. The till opens.
  2. Under Choose this device's register, pick the register from the Register list.

If the list is empty, the message tells you to create a register under POS → Registers first.

Open a shift

The top bar now shows the register, the shift number (for example Shift #12), the price list and its currency, and how many items are loaded on the device.

If this device should be a different register, tap Use a different register before you open the shift. The Back office button takes you to the back office without opening a shift.

  1. The screen says Open a shift on R01 (with your register's code).
  2. Count the cash you are putting in the drawer to start the day.
  3. Type that amount in Opening cash float. Leave 0 if the drawer starts empty.
  4. Tap Open shift. The selling screen opens.

Opening a shift without internet

If the device is offline, the button reads Open shift offline. The shift opens on the device straight away with the next shift number the device knows, and it is sent to the server when the connection returns. Sales you make in the meantime are queued too.
