Till hardware: printer, cash drawer, scale labels and LankaQR

Set a till device to print each receipt straight on the thermal printer: on a PC with Chrome or Edge, or on an Android tablet or phone with the free RawBT app, which also opens the cash drawer.

Who can do this: The owner or a manager setting up a till device

Choose how this device prints

  1. Open the till menu. Under This device, Printer has three choices: Print dialog (the browser asks each time), PC, no dialog, and Android (RawBT).
  2. Set Receipt paper to 80 mm or 58 mm to match the printer's roll.
  3. Set Print each receipt to By itself to print as soon as a sale is paid, or leave When I press Print.
  4. Press Test print. A short receipt prints; if nothing comes out, follow the steps below for your device.

On a PC (Windows): no dialog

  1. Install the receipt printer's Windows driver (from the box or the maker's website) and print a Windows test page.
  2. In Windows Settings → Printers, make the receipt printer the default printer.
  3. Right-click the Chrome (or Edge) shortcut on the desktop and choose Properties. At the end of Target, add a space and --kiosk-printing, then press OK.
  4. Close every Chrome window, open Chrome from that shortcut and open the till. Choose PC, no dialog and press Test print: it prints without asking.

To open the cash drawer with each receipt on a PC, open the printer's Printing preferences in Windows and turn on the cash drawer (makers call it Cash drawer, Peripheral or Drawer kick).

On an Android tablet or phone: RawBT

The till sends each receipt to RawBT, which prints it at once. Words in Sinhala or Tamil and the QR code print as small pictures, so they look right on any printer.

On a sale paid in cash, the cash drawer plugged into the printer opens with the receipt. It does not open on a reprint.

If RawBT is not installed, the Play Store opens at its page instead.

  1. Install RawBT print service from the Google Play Store (free).
  2. Open RawBT and choose your printer: pair a Bluetooth printer in Android's Bluetooth settings first, or plug in a USB printer. Print RawBT's own test page.
  3. In the till menu choose Android (RawBT), match the receipt paper to the printer and press Test print. If Android asks which app to use, choose RawBT and Always.

Open the drawer without a sale

With RawBT the drawer opens at once. On a PC a short No sale slip prints and the printer opens the drawer with it.

Each opening is kept with the time, who was at the till, who allowed it and why, and listed on the Z report. Owners and store managers may open it; give other roles Open the cash drawer under Settings → Roles.

  1. Open the till menu and press Open drawer.
  2. Say why (for example: change for a 5000 note) and press Open drawer.
  3. If you may not open it yourself, the till asks for a manager: the manager chooses their name and types their PIN.

Weighed goods: the scale's labels

At the till, scanning a scale label adds the item with its weight. A label with a price adds the weight that price buys at the item's price. Scanning a second label of the same item adds its weight to the line.

If no product has the item number, the till says so and nothing is added.

  1. Go to Point of sale → Tills. Under Weighing-scale labels, tick Read scale labels at the tills.
  2. Type the first two digits your scale prints (from 20 to 29), the item number digits (usually 5), and whether the label carries the weight in grams or the price. The scale's settings or manual says which.
  3. Scan one label your scale printed into Try a label: the item number and the weight or price it reads show below. Press Save.
  4. Under Catalogue → Products, give each weighed product the scale's item number (PLU) as one of its barcodes, for example 00123, and sell it by the kilo.

Customers pay by LankaQR

If the customer's app does not take the amount, press Show the plain QR: the customer scans your usual QR and types the amount shown in large type.

LankaQR payments wait in the LankaQR clearing account in the books until the bank pays them into your bank account.

  1. Go to Point of sale → Tills. Under LankaQR, press Scan and point the camera at the LankaQR on your bank's sticker (or paste its text). Check the name it shows is your shop's, and press Use this LankaQR.
  2. Before customers use it, pay a small amount to yourself from two different apps.
  3. At the till, choose LankaQR at the payment and press Show the QR: the till shows a QR with the amount in it. The customer scans it with any LankaQR app.
  4. When the money shows on your phone or in the bank's SMS, press Paid. Type the reference from the message if you want it on record.
